Research area

Sebastian Doetterl is a Physical Geographer with a special focus on soil development and soil degradation. He is working as an Assistant Professor for Soil Resources at ETH Zurich and co-founder of the Congo Biogeochemistry Observatory. His research is oriented towards carbon and nutrient dynamics across geo-climatic gradients with a focus on the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on soil development and how we can preserve soils as a resource for future generations. He is particularly interested in bridging the gap between process understanding from experimental data to model development and the spatial representation of biogeochemical cycles. He has been working on soil alteration and its consequences for biogeochemical cycles in a large variety of ecosystems, pedo-climatic gradients and chronosequences, with his latest focus being on tropical African landscapes and large scale geochemical transects in the Arctic.

Ph.D. in Physical Geography, emphasis on Soil Science and Geoecology
