Samuel Küng wins Esri Young Scholar Award 2020
D-USYS
Samuel Küng, a Master’s student in the Environmental Science programme at D-USYS, has won the Esri Young Scholars Award 2020. He could present his Master’s thesis "Deriving forest masks according to the forest definition of the Swiss National Forest Inventory based on 3D remote sensing data" to experts from all over the world at this year's Esri user conference. Congrats!
In cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, Samuel Küng has created a model that uses 3D remote sensing data to calculate an automated forest delimitation using a common forest definition. The focus was on the question whether the use of vegetation elevation models from LiDAR data or from aerial image data achieves better results.
Esri Inc. (Environmental Systems Research Institute) is a US software producer of geoinformation systems (GIS). The Esri Young Scholar Award honours outstanding Bachelor's and Master's theses from all around the world. 27 students from as many countries have become Esri Young Scholars this year. Due to COVID-19, they were not be able to receive their prize at the Esri User Conference in San Diego this year as in previous years. Instead, the ceremony took place in the context of the virtual Esri User Conference, as well as the poster presentation of all Esri Young Scholars.
