Every year, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) determines which researchers have been cited most by their peers. This provides a metric for how influential the researchers are. Of the 7,125 researchers who appear on this year’s list of Highly Cited Researchers, 98 are based in Switzerland and 21 work at, or have a connection to, ETH Zurich.

«Highly Cited Researchers» at D-USYS 2023

  • Erich Fischer, Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Atmosphere and Climate (IAC)
  • Nicolas Gruber, Professor for Environmental Physics at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics (IBP)
  • Reto Knutti, Professor for Climate Physics at the Institute for Atmosphere and Climate (IAC)
  • Sonia Seneviratne, Professor for Land Climate Dynamics at the Institute for Atmosphere and Climate (IAC)
  • Johan Six, Professor for Sustainable Agroecosystems at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS)

Furthermore:

  • Urs Baltensperger, Head of Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry at PSI and Emeritus Adjunct Professor at D-USYS, ETH Zurich
  • Arthur Gessler, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), Adjunct Professor at D-USYS, ETH Zurich
  • Flavio Lehner, Ambizione Fellow at ETH Zurich until August 2020
  • André Prévôt, Paul Scherrer Institutr (PSI), Adjunct Professor at D-USYS, ETH Zurich
  • Michael Siegrist, Professor at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST), affiliated with the Institute for Environmental Decisions (IED) at D-USYS, ETH Zurich
  • Niklaus Zimmermann, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), Adjunct Professor at D-USYS

Determining who will make the Highly Cited Researchers list is based on an assessment of papers published in the previous 11 years. A proportional approach is taken with regard to the different scientific disciplines: One per thousand researchers in each discipline is recognised.

ISI has been compiling these analyses since the 1950s; it has been part of the UK-US company Clarivate Analytics since 2016. That company also calculates the Journal Impact Factor, a metric for the relative importance of the various scientific journals.

Congratulations to the winning researchers on their achievement!
