Oliver Fuhrer and Thomas Hofstetter are new Adjunct Professors at D-USYS
At the request of ETH President Joël Mesot, the ETH Board awarded the title of professor to Oliver Fuhrer and Thomas Hofstetter at its meeting on May 21 and 22, 2025. Congratulations!

Oliver Fuhrer (*1975), currently Lecturer at ETH Zurich and Head of the Department of Numerical Forecasting at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSchweiz), is one of the world’s leading experts in numerical weather and climate modelling using hybrid high-performance supercomputers. He played a key role in the (further) development of the Swiss Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model, COSMO. As an adjunct professor, he will continue to foster the close cooperation between ETH Zurich and MeteoSchweiz, as well as with the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS).
Thomas Hofstetter (*1969), currently Senior Scientist and Private Lecturer at ETH Zurich and Head of Department at Eawag, is a globally recognised expert in environmental chemistry, who has made significant contributions in several areas. He has won multiple awards for his work, which achieved a breakthrough in the use of stable isotope systems to track what happens to industrial chemicals in the natural environment. As an outstanding scientist, teacher and mentor, Thomas Hofstetter will continue to enhance the Department, Eawag and ETH Zurich as a whole.
Congratulations also from the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS)!
