Prof. Dr. Carsten Schubert

Prof. Dr. Carsten Schubert
Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Systems Science
Additional information
Carsten J. Schubert has been the group leader of “Biogeochemistry” at Eawag since 2001 and has led the department of “Surface Waters-Research and Management” from 2012-2021. Since 2004 he teaches classes at ETH Zurich in the field of biogeochemistry and isotope geochemistry.
After his studies in Geology at the University of Giessen, Carsten Schubert did his PhD at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research/University of Bremen about the carbon cycle in the Arctic Ocean. Following postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver/Canada) he became a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen before coming to Eawag. His interest lies in biogeochemistry, organic geochemistry, and isotope geochemistry investigating lakes and oceans. One of his main research topic is the role of lakes emissions in the global methane cycle. His other research interests include methanogenesis and paleoclimate reconstructions using biomarkers and compound-specific isotopic measurements.
Carsten J. Schubert is since 2019 Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollution Dynamics in the Department of Environmental System Sciences.
