Research area

Affiliated with the GIS team (GISTeam), the Forest Resources Management (FORM) group and the soil resources (SR) group, my research interests go across disciplines. I investigate the potential of remote sensing techniques to monitor biodiversity and the drivers of biodiversity loss. I am particularly interested in understanding how plant-soil interactions drive biodiversity and landscape patterns in a changing world. In this regards, I collaborate on two main projects:

  • The first is looking at the impact of climate change on fire regimes in Europe using satellite imagery.
  • The second is investigating the historical land cover and land use change in the African tropics and its legacy on today soil properties and fertility using aerial and satellite imagery.

I completed my PhD at the geography department of the unversity of Zurich where I investigated the species traits diversity of the European beech using metabolomics and spectral approaches.

Additional information

Trained in teaching in higher education and convinced about the importance of science communication, I enjoy developing new educational content using the latest innovative teaching strategies. At the Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystem (ITES), I am jointly responsible for the strategic development of the courses offered in the field of data science; I am teaching geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing; and, I am coordinating the development of educational materials in soil science for lectures (BSc & MSc) and public outreach.
