Gerald Stranzinger was appointed Professor of Breeding Biology at the Institute for Animal Production at the ETH Zurich in 1977. He retired end of March 2005.



Gerald Stranzinger, born 26 October 1939 in Altheim, Austria, graduated in agriculture at the University of Göttingen, and took his doctoral degree at the Veterinary College of the same university. Thereafter, he worked for 3 years as visiting fellow at the University of Illinois and Ohio State University as well as at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science in N.C. In 1976 he qualified as professor (habilitation) at the Technical University of Munich. Then he was elected Associate Professor at the ETH Zurich, and promoted in 1982 to Full Professorship. The focus in his research field was cytogenetics, in connection with genome analysis of farm animals and genetic and biotechnical aspects of reproduction and endocrinology.



Besides having been head of the institute several times, he acted as dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and was member of many internal and external commissions. He is author and co-author of several university textbooks, owner of a patent for a laboratory robot, and has supervised doctoral students and habilitation contenders. His reference list includes more than 300 scientific publications. As a guest professor he lectured in the USA, Australia and Japan. In 1998 he got an additional professorship at the Vet. Faculty of the University of Zurich. In 2001 he recieved the honorary doctor degree of the University of Posen.
