Additional information
Peter Vögeli is a member of the scientific staff at the Institute of Animal Science in the Breeding Biology Group. In 1990 he completed habilitation requirements and received the venia legendi to teach animal genetics classes. On April 1, 1997 he was given the title of Professor and is now head of the blood-typing laboratory for livestock.
Prof. Vögeli was born on August 4, 1948 and comes from Fehraltorf ZH. He studied agronomy at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate under Professor Stranzinger at what was then the Institute of Animal Breeding. Subsequently, he was sent by the Swiss Federal Department of Agriculture and the ETH for a two year training program in the field of biochemical genetics and blood group research to the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Department of Physiology, Endocrinology and Bloodgrouping, in Copenhagen. Since then, he has been at the Institute for Animal Science at the ETH Zurich.
Prof. Vögeli focuses mainly on researching the relationship between genetic markers (blood groups, biochemical-genetic systems, lipoproteins, immunoglobulins, and molecular-genetic markers) and the diseases and performance traits of swine. He also does research, in collaboration with other foreign research groups, on the genome of swine. In 1991 he was distinguished with the Hans Vontobel Award for his habilitation thesis. He is a member of the Standing Committee of Blood Groups and Biochemical Polymorphisms of the International Society of Animal Genetics.
