Prof. Dr. Willi Zimmermann, 1950, studied law at the Universities of Fribourg and Berne and completed his studies in 1978 with a dissertation on the legal problems of energy scarcity. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the Professor Walter Hug Prize. Subsequently he worked as a legal officer on the staff of the Swiss Commission for Framing the Federal Energy Policy and then in the Federal Office for Energy Supply. At the end of 1981 he transferred to the Chair of Forest Policy and Forest Economics at the ETH Zurich. Since 1982 he has been lecturing, conducting research, and providing expert advice in the area of forest policy and law, and nature and landscape policy and law. He has been deputy head of this Chair since 1994 and was given the title of Professor in 1996. He is vice-president of the Federal Commission of Nature and National Heritage Protection, expert in the scientific committee for research in the program on Human-Society-Environment (MGU) at the University of Basel, and scientific advisor for and commissioner of several federal and cantonal administrative offices.
