Matthias Baltisberger is a member of the department of Biology. He is head of the research group "Systematic and Evolution" at the Geobotanical Institute at the department of Invironmental Sciences at ETH Zurich. He was appointed ETH-Professsor in 2003.



Matthias Baltisberger was born in 1951. He studied natural sciences at ETH Zurich and gained his diploma in 1976. He went on to do research in plant systematics with Professor Hans Hess and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1979. Since then he has been lecturer in systemtic botany and curator of the Herbarium of Phanerogams of ETH Zurich. In 1987 he became responsible for all teaching in systematic botany at ETH Zurich.



His research interests include evolutionary systematics of various genera with an Alpine distribution (e.g. Draba, Ranunculus). In addition, the development of new media for teaching has become a major focus. He is lecturer in several courses in systematic and ecological botany for several departments (including bachelor and master programs as well as doctoral students). He is curriculum advisor for section A1, Ecology and Evolution, in the Department of Biology.
