Additional information

Hans Peter Pfirter, as director of the Scientific Service of UFA, was responsible for research and development in the area of animal nutrition. The cooperation of this agricultural organization with the ETH Zurich, Institute of Animal Sciences, is based on common research activities at UFA experimental locations with an emphasis on extending the results of the Institute's metabolism and model experiments, primarily on pigs and poultry, under conditions approximating practice. In 1993 Hans Peter Pfirter was given the title of Professor. He retired in September 2003.

Born on January 16, 1938, from Pratteln, Basel, Switzerland, Prof. Pfirter, after training in agriculture, studied at the ETH Zurich in the Department of Agriculture and Food Sciences, completing his doctorate in 1970. From 1983 he was a lecturer at the ETH in the areas of non rminant nutrition, feed science, feed technology, and introduction to the animal production (for students in food science).

One of Prof. Pfirter's main concerns is the nutrition of animals with regard to the best possible shaping of the quality of the products generated and to economic aspects, and to make a contribution to an agricultural animal husbandry in which animals are regarded not merely as objects for the provision of raw materials and food, but as well-kept and cared-for living beings in systems of production which are functional and environmentally sustainable in the long term.
