Research area

Professor Holderegger’s research activities focus on biodiversity, conservation biology and landscape genetics.

Rolf Holderegger has been an Adjunct Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) in the Department of Environmental Sciences since 2009.

He was born in Männedorf, in 1965.

In 1993 Rolf Holderegger completed a degree in biology at the University of Zurich and obtained a doctorate from the same university in 1997. During his PhD-studies he was a lecturer in mosses and ferns at ETH Zurich.

From 1998 to 2000 he worked as a postdoctoral student at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He returned to Switzerland as Deputy Head of the Department of Ecological Genetics at WSL in 2000. From 2006 to 2010 Rolf Holderegger was Head of the Ecological Genetics and Evolution Research Unit, also at WSL. In addition to his professorship at ETH Zurich, he has been Head of the Biodiversity and Conservation Biology Research Unit at WSL since 2011.
