On plankton, policy, and power-to-gas: Two days at the CAS ETH in Climate Innovation with diverse perspectives on sustainability

Last weekend, the participants of the CAS ETH in Climate Innovation dived deep into the central sustainability topics: biodiversity, the role of policy, and energy.

How is biodiversity measured? How did it change in the past, and what does this mean for our future?

With inputs from Loïc Pellissier and Meike Vogt, we gained exciting insights into scientific methods and the state of the art. Particularly impressive was the plankton analysis with citizen science tools that served as an example of how to deal with complex systems with limited data.

How does a society make sustainable decisions?

In an interactive simulation with Eva Lieberherr, participants slipped into different roles and negotiated solutions. They had a lively experience of the challenges and opportunities of participatory policy-making from the global to the national level.

The second day was dedicated to a visit to Limeco: a regional multi-energy hub that demonstrates how CO₂-neutral energy can be generated from waste and wastewater. An impressive example of the circular economy in practice, involving heat, electricity and gas.
