A great start to the semester for D-USYS

Around 160 new students in Environmental Sciences (2018 figure: 150), plus around 40 new students in Agricultural Sciences (2018 figure: 70), have successfully started their first semester at the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS).

While the number of students in Environmental Sciences has remained relatively stable compared to the previous year, this figure has decreased considerably in Agricultural Sciences. “We first need to wait and see whether this is a one-off dip, and whether things will go back to the previous level next year,” said Director of Studies Susanne Ulbrich. In our time of "Fridays for Future", the degree programme is more relevant than ever. "Our graduates play an active role in shaping the agriculture of the future. We need creative, critical students so we can meet challenges in a future-focused way!"

Proportion of women in D-USYS remains high

With around 60% of students in Environmental Sciences and 50% in Agricultural Sciences being women, the proportion of women on the Bachelor’s programmes in D-USYS remains far above ETH’s average. This figure has shrunk to 34%, down 2% from the record high it reached in the previous year. As a result, it remains important for ETH Zurich to offer targeted encouragement to young women and encourage them to study at ETH.

Exchanges with other universities

This semester, 34 students on the Environmental Sciences programme, plus 15 students on the Agricultural Sciences programme, are taking up the opportunity to spend one or two semesters overseas at a partner university. In return, D-USYS is currently hosting 14 students from partner universities in Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and French-speaking Switzerland.
