Scientific staff includes scientific assistants, doctoral students, senior assistants, postdocs and senior scientists. The following is an overview of information from the department.

Mid-career study Executive summary

D-USYS puts a lot of efforts in promoting the career development of the scientific staff. To this end the department has carried out two different surveys to analyse the situation and needs of the scientific staff. The results were used to create a plan of action that is currently in the implementation stage.

  • The Academic Association of Scientific Staff at ETH Zurich (AVETH - Association of Scientific Staff ETH) represents the interests of scientific assistants, doctoral students, senior assistants, postdocs, senior scientists and all other scientific staff, excluding professors.
  • The Association of Scientific Staff of the Department of Environmental Systems Science (VMUSYS) represents the interests of scientific assistants, doctoral students, senior assistants, postdocs, senior scientists and all other scientific staff, excluding professors, in the department.

General organisation and University Assembly of ETH Zurich:

Duration of employment at ETH Zurich is bindingly laid down in the external page ETH Act (Art 17b) and in the Ordinance governing scientific employees of ETH Zurich (Art 9).

  • Doctoral students and postdocs are employed for a maximum of six years.
  • Senior assistants are employed for a maximum of six years.

If you take on teaching responsibilities from a professor on sabbatical, contact the relevant study coordination for a teaching assignment.

The Richtlinien für die Erteilung und Entlöhnung von Lehraufträgen an der ETH Zürich (German only) are generally applicable.

The team for educational development at ETH Zurich is there to support lecturers and other teaching staff. The aim is to promote and further develop teaching excellence at ETH Zurich.

Young researchers of any nationality that have completed their doctoral thesis in Switzerland can apply for support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) for postdoc positions abroad. Postdocs can also apply for a ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship or a external page Marie-Curie-Skłodowska Action from the European Commission.

Senior postdocs can also apply to the external page SNSF for an Ambizione grant, while external page Prima Grants are only available for female senior postdocs. Prima Grants not only cover the salary of the recipient, they also cover the remuneration of a doctoral student as well as a research technician, giving the recipient the opportunity to set up their own research group. The guest professor provides laboratory and office spaces and usually acts as a formal supervisor for the doctoral students. Additional funds to supplement the budget for the support staff are provided by the department.

The ETH Zurich Research Commission assesses proposals for ETH Zurich research funding and makes financing recommendations to the Vice President for Research. It also checks proposals for ETH Zurich postdoc scholarships. Proposals for SNSF scholarships for young researchers are also dealt with by the ETH Zurich Research Commission.

The D-USYS Family Office is open to members of the department. The room can be used by parents or carers who would like to bring their children to work and supervise them themselves. Family Office D-USYS

When a child is born, the ETH Domain grants fathers 10 days paid leave. The department is committed to ensuring that fathers benefit from this option. The department is committed to ensuring that fathers benefit from this option.
