Since April 2019, Thom Van Boeckel has been an Assistant Professor for Health Geography and Policy at D-USYS. Van Boeckel is working on the application and development of statistical processes in order to understand the spatial variation of infectious diseases. His research lies at the interface of science and policy.
Resistance to antibiotics is increasing rapidly worldwide. Thom Van Boeckel's goal is to accelerate the international response to this issue. Therefore, one of his main areas of research is the spatial distribution of antibiotic use in human medicine and animal husbandry. He maps antibiotic resistance in low-to-middle-income countries, where hardly any data is collected regarding the prevalence of this phenomenon.
Through the appointment of Thom Van Boeckel, ETH Zurich is boosting its expertise in an area of great relevance to health policy. The assistant professorship is financed by an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship, which Van Boeckel obtained from the Swiss National Science Foundation.
