Arboretum (P01)
The Waldlabor Arboretum project exhibits the native woody species of Central Europe, those that are frequently introduced or those that may immigrate in the near future. In total, about 400 tree and shrub species are made accessible.
Background
Tree and shrub species are the main structural species of forest ecosystems. The diversity of woody species is a guarantee for the stability and adaptability of our forests and for the sustainable provision of diverse forest services.
The Arboretum is not only important for ETH students of environmental sciences with forest/landscape specialization, but also invites all those interested in forests to marvel at the diversity of our woody flora and to reflect on the role of biodiversity. The arboretum is already attracting great interest during Waldlabor events and guided tours, and generates a considerable response from the public.
Goals
In contrast to previous forest nature trails, the Arboretum of the Waldlabor Zurich will show the entire diversity of all tree and shrub species native to Central Europe, as well as common introduced and potentially immigrating species, amounting to a total of around 400 species.
In a first subproject, 250 woody species will be planted along a wide circular path in the Hönggerberg forest, grouped by relationship and ecological requirements. Each species will be spatially recorded in the Waldlabor app and the essential species characteristics documented in words and pictures.
In a second subproject, another 150 low-competition small shrub species as well as woody species with special site requirements or species that require monitoring due to their invasive potential will be planted and made accessible on the adjacent ETH campus.
